Traditional Irish Music
Altan have launched a Pledge Music campaign for their new album which will be called "The Gap of Dreams". As always Tradconnect gets behind these campaigns, lending our support through our network. Here is the band's message:
"Thirty years on the road (hard to believe!) and we’re at work on a new album to celebrate our long and happy road. We are looking for your help with our Pledge Campaign in order to record the album later this year. This time we have a myriad of new gifts for you to avail of. We have commissioned Donegal jeweller Annie Quinn to create a new Altan pin in solid silver and she will also make a one off signed Gold fiddle for one lucky person. Barry Britton, the well known artist , has made a very special drawing of the band to celebrate 30 years on the road. We have new T-Shirts to celebrate our 30 years on the road. We will also be offering Altan Gold Discs. Our friends at Donegal pens have made Altan inscribed wooden pens. These along with our CD’s, posters, photographs , house concerts, and Skype calls…..what else would you want?
After many exciting projects we’ve decided to record this time in Donegal where our music, tradition and connections are rooted. We are really happy to have been able to do so much to bring the music and song of Donegal to the world and to contribute to its popularity as far afield as Japan and New Zealand as well as much nearer home.
The working title of our new project is “The Gap of Dreams”. We found the expression in a beautiful ghostly poem, The Ballad of Douglas Bridge, by Francis Carlin, referring to the portal between this world and the Otherworld — “the gap o’ dreams is never shut’, says the poet.
This is particularly true in the Donegal music tradition, where fiddlers often learnt tunes from the fairies, people were very aware that the Otherworld is always close, and musical giants such as the Dohertys, the Cassidys and the Campbells were well acquainted with the mystery of inspiration, where tunes and words indeed pop unbidden from an unseen realm that lay all around in the bogs and hills.
We are actively walking the hills and valleys looking for fairies, to learn a few new tunes and songs for this new project. Can’t wait!"
