Traditional Irish Music
TG4 has won the Arts Programme Award at the Celtic Media Festival 2013 in Swansea. John Doherty – Ar Leirg na Gaoithe won this category in competition with major programmes from Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The programme celebrates the musical legacy of Donegal’s John Doherty: a master fiddler, storyteller, singer and travelling tinsmith, one of the last links to an ancient way of life. His musical ability and his reputation continue to fascinate all who hear of him and his music.
In the documentary a young Donegal fiddle player, Ciarán Ó Maonaigh explores the life and influences of his musical hero and through rare archive footage of John Doherty, and of Donegal and its people, he brings a taste of a disappearing world and a glimpse of John’s musical genius. Produced by independent production company Éabhlóid, director Eoghan Mac Giolla Bhríge was in Swansea to receive the award for a production that was part-funded by the Broadcast Authority of Ireland.
