Traditional Irish Music
This is my first post here, so let me start by introducing myself.
I'm a 50+ year old man from Holland, raised in a strict Protestant family and married to a lovely Catholic girl, who I met at the dancing school. At the age of 16 I decided not to be religious tho. I studied Civil Engineering, had many piano lessons, became a proud father of three and as a profession, I became a CAD software consultant. Now, I'm selling CAD software for more than 20 years. But making music and singing has kept me busy all my life and so does the rhyming and playing with words. Most of my poems grow into songs and I love converting famous poems into songs. English is not my mother tongue, but I learned it young at school and it got a boost when I worked in Arabia for six months as a trainee.
In 2006 I joined a band of friends who decided to focus on Irish ballads and pubsongs. That opened a new world to me and looking back, it feels as a major turning point in my life! Since that time I make music trips to Ireland each year. I left the band with pain in my heart to have more time for songwriting and improving my music skills to be able to bring my creative work to stages. Actually I hate performing, because there's such a strive for perfection around it. Then I discovered the concept of the Irish Sessions and I decided to start a monthly session series by myself in a little pub in Katwijk aan Zee. There's a lovely intimate setting for performing songs and tunes. "If only the best birds sing the woods would be silent" is an Irish saying I like to link to my sessions. And that's how it often goes. People from the audience come and enjoy and sometimes are excited to bring just one song. Also traditionally singing is something pretty unknown in Holland. We do that on multiple places now and the session hosts are able to keep in touch easily through the new social media. We share ideas, songs and events.
Enough about myself! Next posts will be about my creative work.
