Traditional Irish Music
We took some time out of our work day to attend the first of the UCD traditional recitals in UCD College, Dublin. They have a vibrant traditional society that last year undertook a series of intimate concerts featuring the likes of John Carty and others. This year they have moved them to lunch time so we decided to check them out. Tradconnect member Kavan Donohue seems to be at the heart of them and first up was legendary fiddler and Chieftain member Séan Keane.
The recitals take place in a lecture room which allows the audience to get up close and personal with the performer. For this lunchtime gig there is an audience of close to 100 made up mostly of students. Séan took us through a nice selection of jigs and reels with a few stories thrown in for good measure. Its great to see one of Ireland's true music legends at close quarters. Next up is Colm Gannon and Alec Finn on February 18th which should make for a great few tunes. Colm has just released his new album The Rights of Man which we reviewed so check it out. We might just go to the next one as well.
