Traditional Irish Music
Our Track of the Week with close to 800 plays over the course of 7 days is the legendary Bobby Casey. “Maestro” is one of the most anticipated releases of 2015 and was launched at Fleadh Nua this year. A large number of people turned out to join Bobby’s family and friends in Glór on Sunday, 24th May 2015 as they commemorated a truly iconic figure of traditional music. The recording has been produced by Cois na hAbhna Regional Archive. Drawing on recordings made back in 1969 and 1970 by Séamus Mac Mathúna for Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann it includes 18 tracks in total.
Here is track 2 from the album including Toss the Feathers and The College Groves. The liner notes state that “Bobby Casey, Joe Ryan and East Clare Piper and Fiddler Martin Rochford are regarded as the primary sources of this reel. The College Groves was one of many tunes popularised by the South-Sligo fiddler, James Morrison, a contemporary of Michael Coleman. This tune offers great scope for exploration and attention to detail, rendering it ideally suited to a player of Bobby Casey’s creativity.”
