Tradconnect's 5 Minute Interview - Kevin Madden

Wecome to the Tradconnect 5 minute interview. Each week we will put a few questions to someone involved with the traditional music scene.

If you would like to take part in this then simply get in touch with us. It applies to people involved with music, community, broadcasting, festivals etc.

Why are you in the news?

I have just released my debut album “The Sugar Loaf”.

How did your album launch go?

A did a couple of launches and all went really successfully selling quite a few CDs in the process.

Your favourite traditional album from the last year or so?

The Trí-Tones

Your favourite non-traditional album from the last year or so?

Don't really buy a lot of non trad albums but I really enjoyed John Smith -The Great Lakes.

What are you working on at the moment?

Improving my ability to play an octave fiddle, very difficult as the strings are so much thicker than an ordinary fiddle.

Your top tip for someone learning fiddle?

Get your technique correct from the start.

Your opinion on Spotify?

Don't really use it but it is handy to find a variety of music.

If you were in charge of traditional arts in Ireland what single item would you put top of the agenda?

Absolutely no idea, maybe a rule that you don't have to start playing trad music on a whistle, choose the instrument you want.

What 3 albums would you bring with you to a desert island?

A classic - Kathleen Collins - No explanation needed.

Modern Classic -Danny O’Mahoney - In Retrospect. Finally a musician that made me like The Maid of Mount Cisco.

A Surprise - I would bring any album playing mozart compositions.

Which single artist living or dead would you most like to have a long lunch with?

Predictable would be Michael Coleman, so I would go with Joe Cooley and he better bring the box with him as well. Or Mozart himself ( a genius).

Do you think the album in its present format is doomed?

Doomed maybe but not for a few years yet.

Your favorite movie of all time?

Schindler’s list.

A book you read recently that you would recommend?

Don’t really read books but any political biographies- Mikhail Gorbachev was my particular favourite.

A phrase you use far too often?

One more! useful in sessions when you want to play a tune again and when drinking, other than that at work I do use the phrase “ explain that to me like I’m a six year old” In other words keep things simple.

Your ideal Saturday night?

As this is talking about music a nice bottle of red wine is involved somewhere and a few tunes.

Your favourite pub in the world to play music in?

Too many to narrow it down to one.

What are your plans for the rest of 2015?

Sort this Octave fiddle out.
