Women's Christmas in aid of Dublin Rape Crisis Centre - 5th & 6th January

The Workman's Club Dublin have announced 2 days of music and comedy in order to raise funds for The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre. Tickets for this event are priced at just €12 and are valid for 2 days of events across The Main Venue and The Vintage Room. They have brought together some of Ireland’s most exciting artists to perform for this very special weekend. Keep an eye out on their website www.theworkmansclub.com for day by day breakdown and for more announcements over the forthcoming days.

KATIE KIM
Mood is central to the expansive musical landscape of Katie Kim. Darkened corners, icy atmospheres and hypnotic knife edge soundscapes. Piano chords stretch to infinity, silence is employed as devastating punctuation, while the voice, in its salience is all the scattered beauty a glimmer of light can illuminate. Cinematic in scope and tectonic in delivery, It's as deep as you want or need it to be. Waterford native Katie Kim has released four studio albums to date: Twelve (2008), Vaults Vol.1 (2011) Cover & Flood (2012) (UK release 2013) and SALT (2016) Nominated for The RTE Choice Music Award for Album Of The Year.

SALT was recently performed live in a series of concerts with Katie Kim and Crash Ensemble in its entirety, in an alternative reworked form, with arrangements from composer Sean Clancy for Crash. She has also scored an original soundtrack for the 1928 surrealist Germain Dulac silent film, "La Coquille et Le Clergyman", commissioned by The Cork French Film Festival, which she also performed with her full band, live, in front of a sold-out audience and acclaimed director Agnes Varda.

She has been part of many collaborations, including The Waterboys, Sean MacErlaine, Crash Ensemble, David Kitt and Halves amongst many.

MARIA KELLY
Maria Kelly is an alternative-folk artist based between Dublin & Berlin. Raised in the West of Ireland, nestled somewhere along the Atlantic Way, Maria Kelly first picked up the guitar aged 10. As an introspective teenager, she found difficulty in honest self-expression but quickly found an outlet in her ability to put words to music. Taking influence from the likes of Regina Spektor, Daughter and Lisa Hannigan, a delicate alternative-folk sound was formed, layered with deeply personal, humanising experiences.

In 2015, Maria began working with Berlin-based producer Matt Harris (Veta Records, HAWK). ‘Stitches’ was released the following year, praised by the 405, and quickly named one of ‘The 50 Best Tracks of 2016’ in The Irish Times. The track went on to garner 200,000+ streams on Spotify. A number of singles followed, accompanied by shows across Europe supporting the likes of James Vincent McMorrow, KT Tunstall and Paul Noonan (Bell X1). Maria’s work continued to gain momentum, rallying support from Wonderland, Mahogany and The Line Of Best Fit to name but a few. This year launched Maria’s first vinyl release, ‘Dark Places/Small Talk’, a double A-side in which she opens up about her own mental health.
Maria is currently based in Berlin, creating new material and working on her live show.

DOWRY
Dowry is the solo project of multi-instrumentalist and composer Éna Brennan. Since moving to Dublin from Brussels nearly 10 years ago she has obtained an MPhil in Composition from Trinity College Dublin and collaborated with a vast array of artists, be it as a composer, arranger or violinist, weaving in between many of the layers of the Irish music scene. She already has a long list of notable gigs to her name including performances at Other Voices, 12 Points Festival and Sounds From A Safe Harbour. Her show All Things Strings airs monthly on Dublin Digital Radio and she runs an ensemble called Dowry Strings. Upcoming projects include a sold-out tour with Bell X1 around Ireland and the UK, and plans to follow up her experimental debut release In É.

“One of the most talked about acts in the Irish live scene, Éna Brennan's Dowry has been slowly percolating and garnering devotees for a few years now. With the aid of her trusted fiddle, Brennan has been routinely fleshing out the sounds of some of the country's most engaging emerging acts." Totally Dublin

MAIJA SOFIA
Maija Sofia is a songwriter from the west of Ireland. Taking influence from the storytelling nature of traditional folk songs and merging it with a raw unpolished performance style, her songs have been called evocative, strange, dark and tender. The contrast between a childhood on the coarse edge of the Atlantic coast and an abrupt move to London at the age of nineteen informs her writing, and her songs display a lyrical maturity that weaves between the dreamlike, the devastating and the everyday. She has released one EP and a handful of singles and has performed at Other Voices, Electric Picnic and the London Antifolk festival as well as support slots for Joan as Police Woman, Julien Baker and Stella Donnelly. Earlier this year an unreleased song of hers was covered by Lankum's Radie Peat and Katie Kim for their collaborative shows in Dublin and Cork. In 2018 she released a single 'Flowers', toured Ireland and the UK and recorded her debut album which will be released next year.

RUTH HUNTER + guests
Hunter is a self-described “human woman from Dublin”. By day, she’s a “staying afloat day-job worker” in a “non-specific government office” who moonlights as a comedian and writer on the side. Hunter started performing stand-up in the summer of 2015 and has quickly established herself as one of the most exciting, unique comedians working in Ireland. She cites the likes of Eddie Izzard, Dylan Moran, Mitch Hedberg and Steven Wright as among her influences. If Hunter has anything in common with those comedy luminaries, it’s her onstage presence. In 2016, she came second in So You Think You’re Funny, a renowned stand-up comedy competition that’s been held in Edinburgh every year since 1988.
