The Outside Track are back with a new album, and a new member. The album is Light up the Dark and regular members Ailie Robertson (harp and backing vocals), Cillian O'Dalaigh (guitar and backing vocals), Fiona Black (accordion), Mairi Rankin (fiddle and backing vocals), are joined by Teresa Horgan (vocals and flute).
This is their 4th album, and it shows them to be a band with a very determined spirit. In discussions with harpist Ailie Robertson she said: “We definitely feel that the longevity of the group is something that's important to us - so many young bands only get one album together, after which nothing really happens. We have always made a serious commitment to the band, and to being on the road for a large part of the year. Logistically it's tricky, as we all live in different places, and even continents, but being on the road and performing is what we love - meeting people, sharing our culture, seeing reactions to our music. Even when we have a gruelling schedule we are so grateful to be making this our life!”
Here is the opening track from the album called Drilling. It includes Shuffle, The Drilling Reel and Aye Right.
The album was recorded over the course of a couple of months, in various locations around Scotland, Ireland and Cape Breton. The one thing that they really wanted to achieve on this recording was a very 'live' feel. They avoided using isolation booths, simply recording together as a band. This approach applied to the majority of the tracks and the results are there for all to hear. Across 12 tracks they captured that essential interaction, and the trademark Outside Track eye for sophisticated and engaging arrangements is everywhere to be seen.
Instrumentally you can’t fault the input of the founding members across the five instrumental tracks. Vocally Teresa Horgan brings a great depth to the songs, which include Set You Free, Nanci Griffith’s Trouble in the Fields, Do You Love an Apple and the great Canadee-I-O. Ailie said: “We knew Teresa for a long time, having studied at college with her, and she's subbed with us in the past, so it was a very easy transition. We all knew we got on well musically and personally, so it felt like an extremely natural fit right from the start.”
“We've toured a lot this year with the new material, and are delighted with the response it’s been getting. All the songs on the album have a very emotional back-story, happy and sad, so they get a strong reaction, and with the tune-set, we see people up on their feet dancing, so we know they like it! The tracks that probably get the biggest response live are Get Me through December and Hurry Up and Wait.”
