Traditional Irish Music
Welcome to Tradconnect’s Worldwide Album Launch Series. For these launches we are working with over 70 radio broadcasters globally, making new traditional releases available for immediate free download through our Download Centre. For artists this makes an online launch a truly global event with radio stations around the world gaining immediate access to the album.
Curlicue is the debut album by Freya Rae (flutes, whistles, clarinet) and Louis Bingham (guitars, banjo, bouzouki, bodhran). They present an exciting and original album exploring unusual traditional and new compositions based on Irish and Breton dance music. Freya is originally from the Scottish Borders where she learnt the flute and whistle from a young age, while Louis is a multi-instrumentalist from Devon who has developed distinctive playing styles on guitar, tenor banjo, bouzouki, and bodhrán. They met in University in Newcastle in 2009 and began playing together in sessions in the city, before working more closely as a duo.
“After graduating we worked together a lot doing music outreach for a charity called Live Music Now, but also ended up doing several separate projects as well” said Louis when we spoke to him for this launch. They have both been busy with their own projects. Freya has recently been recording and touring with English fiddle player Tom Kitching and Louis has been touring with Giffords Circus as well as collaborating with his mother Gris Sanderson on several projects including her new nyckelharpa album Radial , and a forthcoming album from Moroccan Gnawa master Simo Lagnawi.
The duo took a little bit of a back seat during this time, but even so they had built up a lot of repertoire since forming, and it seemed like it was time for the next step. "Last winter we decided to bring the best of our music together in preparation for recording this album in the spring." Louis said.
This is the opening track from the album and features The Foorglass Jig (Tom McElvogue), The Orphan (trad.), Drag Her Round the Road (trad.), and Mullingar Lea (trad.). The first tune was written by flute player Tom McElvogue after an inspirational visit to what was once the family home of his maternal grandfather in Foorglass, Connemara. "Thanks to Tom for passing the tune on to us, and also for helping to find a name for the first reel."
“We recorded virtually the whole album over one very intense week in May, then chipped away at the mixing, mastering and artwork throughout the summer. All credit to Gris Sanderson who produced the album and put it out on her label Waulk Records. We couldn’t be happier with the end result.”
“We have included material from way back when we first started playing together, like the last set The Watchmaker which is a set of reels we originally put together for a second year recital. Other tracks like Hopsa & Plinn and Call to the Dance were developed later on after we’d visited Brittany and learnt from some of the great traditional musicians over there, and some sets were put together specifically for the album like The Foorglass Set and the title track Curlicue.”
“The album as a whole represents six years of music making together, and the development of our influences over that time, and we’re very happy with Curlicue as a piece of work that has clearly captured the heart and soul of what we do as a duo. It’s inspiring to have a real focus on this project now, and it gives us a great reason to perform and develop our music further.”
