Traditional Irish Music
Having kicked off their tour of the small islands around Ireland with performances on Sherkin Island and Clare Island recently, Ye Vagabonds set sail for Arranmore, Cape Clear and all three of the Aran Islands throughout July and August. The tour is a part of the 'Islander Presents' series - an ambitious touring circuit for four of Ireland's most exciting traditional and folk acts.
Brothers Brían and Diarmuid Mac Gloinn will perform to those who inhabit our most sparse and barren sods of earth off in the Atlantic, filling them with tunes and tales, young and old, on the long summer evenings. For the past two years, Ye Vagabonds have been collecting songs from around Ireland, many of them originating from the islands scattered around the coast. Now, they bring these songs back to the islands themselves, performing in some of the county’s most picturesque locations.
The islands of Ireland are dear to the Mac Gloinn’s heart, their mother’s side of the family have originated from Arranmore for a few hundred years, and they have been researching and learning songs from the island the past few years. Brían says, “we’re hoping that wherever we go, now that the word is out that we’re interested in old island songs, that people will come to us with songs as we go along. People often come up to us after a gig to correct a story about a song, or give us an extra verse, so it would be amazing to get a bunch more tips on island songs as we go along this tour.”
Joining the band on their adventure is renowned music filmmaker Myles O’Reilly (Arbutus Yarns/This Ain’t No Disco), who is documenting the tour. Culminating in a new album later this year, the folk and trad duo are set to breathe life into old songs, long ago abandoned. This is a unique tour by one of Ireland's most exciting groups at their creative prime, and the result is a collision of historic beauty and craft with contemporary ideas and refreshing voices.
