Unfortunately, I 'm not able to enjoy it much though! lol I work in Laguna Beach (7 hours away) so I'm only able to make it back on weekends and then there may be times when I'm not able to (like this weekend). At least my sons are able to all attend the same college there and enjoy the scenery!

"Looped" strings refers to not having the ball at the end of the string. Most mandolins are the "ball type". It is possible yours may be different however. Might be best to have someone look at it if you are not sure.

I recommend starting with the light if the majority of your playing is practice and consider going with the heavier gauges if you sit in on sessions a lot (for volume). John Pierce does make a Medium Guage as well which I use a lot. It provides the volume without the additional stress on the neck associated with heavier guage strings.
