That's OK Mats, I didn't write the note, I just copied & pasted from YouTube.

I notice that on his Altan Bio he now calls his instrument a Bouzouki see: Ciaran Curran

However, he always used to call it a Cittern see: Ciaran Curran

Also, on the LPs Within a Mile of Kilty & Dog Big, Dog Little, I note that he is credited with playing a Cittern & on the 1st, Noel O'Grady was on Bouzouki.

However, I believe this site explains why there is some confusion here.

It seems Stefan Sobell called his 8 String instruments Citterns, so of course that's why Ciaran called his a Cittern. Stefan Sobell

On this page, you'll see that Stefan Sobell talks about 8, 10 & 12 string Citterns, so it looks like the distinction between Bouzouki & Cittern isn't perhaps quite as clear cut as you might imagine Mats. Stefan Sobell

I note too that he talks about them as being just versions of the Octave Mandolin.

I suppose, as Stefan builds those instruments, he can call them what he wants. ;-)

The fact is, if you check out the history of this instrument, it originally had only 4 pairs of strings: Cittern

So I reckon Ciaran can call it what he wants, just so long as he doesn't call me .. early in the morning! ;-)

Sorry but a "cittern" has 10 strings so Ciaran Curran

plays bouzoki (8 strings) as he used to play, oh´ by the

way, very nice set....

Well Simon, the Ciarans are life long friends & Fermanagh men while Ciaran Kelly & I play together in my local Ballycastle Session every Friday night, so when your asked to play on the TV, it helps if you know the other musicians. :-)

Cheers

Dick
